i have a straight iron from revlon that works great. i have another from vidal sassoon. they run about $40. do not buy one of those really expensive ones. its just crap.

also, hot tools is also a good company. dont spend more than $45 whatever you do.

Ceramic Chi -- it works the best and does the least damage. It's pricey, but if it's something you know she'll love, make it a joint gift with someone else -- one of her friends or family. My siblings pitched in to get me one a few years ago! ;)

One thing you may want to consider is looking on ebay. These things don't really tend to wear and tear, so as long as you buy one in good condition, that's always an option.

go with a salon brand name. it may cost a little more but it will last sooo much longer i have had my chi for 2 1/2 years and its still perfect. so chi or babyliss or something like that would be good
