What Damage Does A Hair Straightener Actually Do?

I've been using my Straightener for over a year and I'm wondering what, if any, the straightener will actually do to my hair? When you think about it your hair is consistently growing out, so "damaged" hair will just be replaced with new hair all togather in a year. Yes it does use heat which is very bad for your hair, but what actually happens if you keep using it? I've looked through past straightening damage pages on Yahoo Answers and know one ever really /says/ what the straightener does to your hair. There always like "Oh yeah it causes allot of damage cut back", but /what/ damage? Does anyone know.

a flat iron shouldnt cause any damage if u are using it right... but neither should any other insturment that u use on your hair... as long as u treat your hair with a heat protecting spray or gel or whatever you should be just fine. just make sure that u dont pull really hard or leave it on the direct heat for too long... as long as u are smarter then the straightener u will be fine... people who get damaged hair are the ones that dont take care of there hair... hope i could help

It gives you split ends which is a real pain in the @$$ and it looks horrible. But then again, the hair straightener straigtens out the ends so u can't really see it all the time.

If you don't keep you hair conditioned and healthy it will look like you stuck a fork in a electical socket and brushed it out. It can cause split ends, fried hair, and may cause hair lose(do to the iron pulling your hair).heat damaged hair looks afful and takes a long time to make it healthy again.
