Buildup on hair straightener?

My hair straightener has hard buildup on it from hair products. The buildup is not just on the edges, it is on the whole plate. I have tried rubbing alcohol and that barely got a little off after rubbing for several minutes. I've tried letting it heat up and then wiping it with a wet cloth but that didn't work either. Is there anything else I can try, or is it just time for a new straightener? They are expensive and I'd like to not have to get a new one.

Make sure the straightener is OFF, grab a household cleaning product, like CLR, and scrub at the buildup, afterwards, make sure ALL the cleaning product is wiped away, and resume using your newly clean straightener.

Try some dawn dishwashing soap dilluted in water, and scrub at it with a stiff toothbrush.

Make sure its unplugged...not just off. But yes, cleaner works.

Try scraping it off with a flat piece of plastic. Don't use metal because it will scratch the straightener and the scratches will make stuff stick to it again... I find scraping is the best to get that stuff off! It dissolves in water/alcohol but it usually takes a long time to dissolve and come off that way.
