does anybody have any tips when using a hair straightener on how to make it so it doesn't ruin your hair for the future?

anything i should do to keep it from frying or burning or anything?

all tips accepted!i want it to keep it as nice as i can but still use a straightener.

I use a CHI flat iron and I bought the CHI iron guard thermal protection spray. I know other brands make a similar spray. It is designed to protect your hair from heat damage and lock in nutrients.

I straighten my hair every single morning... so I'm applying some major heat damage to it. The girl who cuts my hair told me to start applying a heat activated protection spray on it while it's still damp before I straighten it ((I have a wet/dry straightener)). If your straightening iron isn't a wet/dry one, obviously don't use it while your hair is wet because that will fry it. Something else I do, while I still have yet to figure out why, is three days a week I switch from my regular shampoo and conditioner and use a heat activated formula.

I have the same problem lol. Use a ceramic straightner. Anything with metal or one of those wet to dry will fry you right up. I've also found that it helps to use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Conditioner is key. It makes straightening easier.

use a protective coating spray before u straightn ur hair. also, use a good conditioner. deep condition ur hair once a week 4 xtra moisture. try 2 get the ends trimmed every so often so that split ends dont show. hope this helps! :]

Always use a heat protection serum or spray, and put it on each section that you want to straighten.

Use the best quality irons that you can afford - the better ones maintain a constant heat.

Don't keep going over the same section of hair - 2 pull throughs is enough - if it hasn't straightened by then, you have too much hair in your section.

Use a tail comb to get a good clean section and also to place in front of your irons to keep the hair that is being straightened as flat as possible.

Use a good shampoo and conditioner designed for hair that takes a lot of abuse - best to go to your local Sally or other hairdressing supplier and get a professional brand.

Try and give your hair a few days off from the irons, and treat it to a nice reconstructoring hair mask.

This way you will keep glossy locks - as there is nothing worse than straight, frizzy dull hair.

Use ceramic irons...they're made to get as hot as stove curlers but not do so much damage, and do not flat iron hair when not needed, for instance, you can wrap it up at night and keep it moisturized, that'll keep it fresh for about a month.

I personally have curly hair and i used a flat iron all throughout high school. Not a good thing. I think if you learn to love the hair you have it will be more manageable. On the other hand, before you straighten your hair, always wash and condition with products that are specifically for relaxing hair. Blow dry your hair completely or allow it to air dry. Apply straightening serum before you dry it. You can also add more when dry. I do. On the weekends you should do deep conditioning and air dry. Apply treatment and sleep with it if you can. I have heard of using avocado, egg. and mayonnaise, but have not tried it. I use hair salon products only. Remember, you get what you pay for. Good luck.
